Municipal Museum of Antequera

The municipal museum of Antequera is located inside the Najera Palac, a family mansion of the eighteenth century that was adapted to house the different collections of the museum.

• Archaeological collection featuring pieces found in ancient Roman cities in the area comprising the municipality. Featuring the collection is the Efebo sculpture of Antequera.
• Fine Arts collection: At the top works of painters and sculptors, some of them very popular like Pedro de Mena, born in Granada on the beginning of the 17th century but stablished in Malaga, he made many religious works in the province, one of the most important is the chorus of the Malaga Cathedral.
• Etnografic museum and local painter exposition.

History of the museum

The inauguration of the museum took place after an important finding in 1955 in one of the farmhouses of the municipality, the Efebo of Antequera, actually the emblem of the museum. The Efebo is a sculpture of 1.54 meters high made in bronze during the first century.

The sculpture was sold to the city at an affordable price from the farmhouse owner, who used it as ornamental figure inside the home.

In 1972 the Antequera museum was inaugurated, result of the organization of the neighbours from the municipality that did not want to lose the sculpture after the Madrid museum requested it.
