The Cathedral

Malaga Cathedral is one of the most important Renaissance and religious monuments in Andalucia, it was declared a monument of cultural interest. The exterior is visually striking for its majestic building that rises in the centre of Malaga and invite the viewer to discover the inside.When visiting Malaga you can not miss the chance to visit one of the landmarks of the city, Gibralfaro Castle.

The interior of the cathedral is a piece of art, sculptures of great expressiveness and beautiful pieces carved in marble.

History of Malaga Cathedral

The begining of the construction of the Malaga Cathedral was ordered by the Catholic Kings in 1528 and it was done above an ancient mosque although works took more than 250 years due changes in the inintual budget and it was never finished.

The begining of the construction is Gothic while the interior has its own style of Renaissance and Baroque influence. In the surrounding area of the cathedral there is a beautiful garden with orange trees.

During the construction the budget of the cathedral was changed to improve the road linking Malaga with Antequera, this caused that one of the cathedral towers remained unfinished which gave the name in spanish by what it is known ‘La Manquita’ (the one armed lady)

At the begining of the 21st century there was a controversy over whether to complete the construction of the second tower but fortunately this initiative did not advance…an historic building should be faithful to its own history and no one else, don’t you think?
