This natural place is unique in the world in its composition, a mountain range rich in iron and platinum, the first causing the typical red colour that gave it its name.

There are hiking trails in this area, paths where enjoying the flora and fauna available, it is also recommended to visit any of the near municipalities, a way of knowing the cultural heritage in its white villages of important Arab influence: Casares, Estepona or Genalguacil.

This mountain range has a characteristic vegetation on its higher heights of 1000 meters, there is in addition some endangered species.

Among the animals we can sight among others the ibex, roe deer, wildcat, golden eagle, falcon, griffon vulture, owl and common reptiles.

Those who enjoy hiking can check some of the available trails in Sierra Bermeja, some are easy while others might require some experience.

Castor river trail

Moderate difficulty that will take you up to the birth of the river. The most difficult part is the begining when you have to go up the river and the slippery rocks.

This trail features some natural water pools where you can refresh if its good weather and ‘charca de las nutrias’ (otters pond)

Reales de Sierra Bermeja trail

Circular signposted route though Reales de Sierra Bermeja area, perfect to discover the environment and with amazing views from the highest point on clear days.

Among the features of this route is the Spanish fir forest and the low difficulty affordable for all ages. There is a shelter with benches where you can have a break or eat.

Distance: 6.44 kilometers round trip

Hiking trail to the top of Reales

This hiking trail is only recommended for experienced visitors, it is a 15 kilometers route. The route begins in Estepona and we recommend to have a vehicle already at the end point as it is a linear route.

We recommend you to make this route out of summer season, the reason is because the long distance and the lack of shadows nor water sources.

How to get to Sierra Bermeja

Head to Estepona and from there you can get to Sierra Bermeja by car or walking, do not forget that you can visit by car the villages of Casares or Genalguacil.
