If you enjoy natural spaces you should not miss the largest lagoon in Andalucia called Laguna de Fuente de Piedra (literally translated is Stone Fountain Lagoon).
Fuente de Piedra Lagoon was used since Roman times to 1950 as a salt source because it accumulates on its surface
Flora and fauna in Fuente de Piedra
This lagoon is in a protected environment and although there are several mammals species such foxes and badgers the area is known for the great diversities of bird species, some of them as the flamingos make their nest during the Spring just before moving to Morocco. In Fuente de Piedra is the largest flamingo colony of Spain and the second in Europe with up 10,000 pairs of this specie.
The lagoon is of great environment importance for a large number of aquatic birds, among them you can find the stork , the shoveled duck and cranes.
Places of Interest
You can get access to the different viewpoints like Mirador del Cerro del Palo where there is a Welcome and Interpretation centre for Spanish and foreigner visitors, the Vicariate viewpoint, Cantarranas o the Observatory of El Laguneto.
Hiking trails
From the Cerro del Palo viewpoint you have access to the hiking trail called Gran Senda Malaga GR – 249. It is at this viewpoint before taking the trail, where you will be able to watch a great variety of aquatic birds species, specially if you visit it during the birds migration.
With over 650km this route pass by Fuente de Piedra at its 18th stage, this trail goes from this place to Campillos town surrounding the southern area of the lagoon and passing by olives and farmland.
Among the main features of this route we can highlight the gaps in Fuente de Piedra and a less popular place that not many people know, the Logon Lagoon. Another of the interesting places to visit is the great panoramic view from Cerro de la Mora, less than 5 kilometres from the beginning of the route and at 450 metres high.
Near the end of this walk you will have a good view of Campillos town.
Interpretation centre and guided visits
When visiting Fuente de Piedra you need to get to the Interpretation and Welcome Centre from where you can book guided visits for 6€ with a duration of 2 hours.
At this Interpretation centre you can also rent binoculars, audioguides in different languages and children karts.

There is an 12 minutes audiovisual exhibition in the morning at: 10:30, 11:30: 12:30 and 1:30am, in the afternoon the exhibition is at: 4:30pm and 5:30pm during the winter and at 5:30pm or 6:30pm on summer.
How to get to Fuente de Piedra
This natural place is located near Campillos And Antequera, if you drive you should take the N-344 road and follow the signs for getting to Fuente de Piedra.
