Fuente de Piedra Lagoon
The Fuente de Piedra Lagoon is the largest lagoon in Andalusia and offers a privileged location for the breeding of the greater flamingo, wintering, and the migratory passage of various birds. The lagoon is home to the largest flamingo colony on the Iberian Peninsula and the second largest in Europe.
The Fuente de Piedra Lagoon is hosting thousands of birds every spring. March and April are the best months to see the flamingos in full breeding activity.
After the abundant rainfall of winter 2025-26, the lagoon is completely full, and a very successful season is expected for the flamingos, as more than 20,000 individuals were counted in 2025.
Fuente de Piedra Lagoon is a salt lake approximately 6 km long and 3 km wide, located next to the village of the same name. Due to its shallow depth, evaporation rates are very high, and the lagoon typically dries up during the summer months.
What is the best time to see flamingos?
The best time to see flamingos is from March to June. Flamingos are present from March to September. When the chicks are about four months old and begin to fly, the flamingos continue their migration.
Nevertheless, the natural environment is beautiful in any season, and many birds are present year-round.
Flamingo Ringing
Every summer, flamingo ringing takes place at the lagoon to study and protect one of the most important flamingo colonies in Europe.
Hundreds of chicks are marked with identification rings that allow them to be tracked over time and in different parts of the world. In addition to its scientific value, the ringing offers visitors a unique opportunity to see these majestic birds up close and learn about the conservation work being done in their natural habitat.
When is the chick ringing?
It’s usually at the end of July or the beginning of August. Around 300 volunteers carry out this task.
Tips and recommendations for visiting Fuente de Piedra
Around the lagoon there are several viewpoints from where you can enjoy the rich landscape and the biodiversity of the wetland. The lagoon covers more than 1,300 hectares. Much of it is inaccessible to protect the wildlife, but from the viewpoints you observe without disturbing the environment.

Visitor Centre
The best place to start your route is at the Visitor Centre to better understand what you’ll see later.
There’s ample free parking right next to the centre. Inside the Visitor Centre, you’ll find a café area with views of the lagoon, and a shop where you can rent binoculars, bicycles, or audio guides.
Entry is free to both the interpretation centre and the marked trails. You don’t need to book (except for guided tours).
Plan your visit
To visit the Lagoon, you can do it in two ways, either with a guided tour or with a self-guided visit. If you have time and the schedules work for you, the best thing to do is take a guided tour because it’s super comprehensive and you get much more out of it.
Guided Tours
You can also take a guided tour. Expert guides will take you to the best viewing spots to observe the flamingos and other birds found in the lagoon, always in small groups to maintain social distancing. They have telescopes available.

Can you bring dogs to the Fuente de Piedra Lagoon?
You can keep them on leashes at the lagoon, and you can bring them inside the Interpretation Centre.
Is a visit to Fuente de Piedra recommended for children?
Absolutely. There are short and easy hiking trails. And the kids can learn about the beautiful flamingos in an endearing way.
What should I bring to Fuente de Piedra Lagoon?
Don’t forget binoculars, sunscreen, a hat, and water if you’re going in summer. In winter, bring a light jacket or sweater.
What to see in Fuente de Piedra
Fuente de Piedra is located just 70 km from Malaga, making it an ideal destination for short breaks. Excellent road and rail connections make it easily accessible from the Costa del Sol.
While many people come solely for the lagoon, the historic centre of Fuente de Piedra is also worth a leisurely stroll. Other visitors choose to spend the entire weekend, combining a visit to the lagoon with other activities in the region. Here are some ideas!
Stone Fountain
Fuente de Piedra literally means “Stone Fountain”. This old fountain located at Plaza de la Constitución is not called that because it is made of stone, but because since ancient times it was believed that it emanated water with healing properties that cured kidney stones.
The Flamingos of the Historic Centre
Recently, the town boasted a new attraction that makes strolling through the municipality more enjoyable and much more entertaining, especially if you’re with children.
Now you can see the flamingos not only at the lagoon. In the historic centre, you’ll find nine flamingo figures located in different spots, representing the customs, history and gastronomy of Fuente de Piedra.
The Giant Bench of Fuente de Piedra
On this flamingo route, you’ll also find another fun spot for taking cool photos: a giant bench, a wooden structure 2.3 metres high and 4 metres wide.
Laberintus Maze – The biggest hedge maze in Spain
Just 6 km from the village, you’ll find another fantastic family activity, also brand new and incredibly original. Laberintus, the largest natural labyrinth in Spain and the only biotechnological one in the world. It has bioreactors capable of generating energy and water from the soil itself.
