Riogordo is a white village located 380 metres above sea level in the Axarquia region, about 36 km from Malaga. Every year, at the end of May or beginning of June, this small village of less than 3000 inhabitants celebrates its Snail Day.

The festival consists of the tasting of more than 350 kilos of snails in broth, a typical Riogordo dish, which are distributed free of charge among the attendees. This unique dish is prepared in the local way: cooked in its own broth and served with the accompaniment of olives, beer and local wine.

In addition to snails and wine, there will also be stands with local products and visitors can enjoy a parade, brass bands, as well as traditional choirs and dance groups.

Take advantage of your visit to the town to stroll through its old quarter with its typical Moorish layout and steep streets.

Route of Oil and Mountains

In Riogordo is produced one of the best olive oils of the province.

Riogordo is one of the seven municipalities of the Axarquia that make up the Route of Oil and Mountains. The other villages of this route are Riogordo, Colmenar, Alfarnate, Alfarnatejo, Periana, Alcaucín and La Viñuela. All of them are located in a unique landscape of mountains, where the green of the olive trees and pastures predominates.

Are you a lover of Malaga’s extra virgin olive oil? Then you can’t miss a visit to this olive cooperative, where one of the best olive oils of the province is produced, called Agro-olivarera Riogordo S.C.A. There you can buy the liquid gold of excellent quality at a good price.

The next of the Gastronomic Festivals in Malaga in June takes us to the tiny and almost unknown village of Corumbela with less than 300 inhabitants.

This is no obstacle to celebrating! During its gastronomic festival the villagers pay homage to their traditional ‘cateto’ bread. In Corumbela they still knead it by hand and bake it in the traditional wood-fired oven, giving it a special flavour. In many homes there are still ovens.

The programme runs from 12 noon to 5 pm and there will be performances, a popular paella and a tasting of traditional bread in La Era.

On the outskirts of the village, you will find the natural spring Las Tres Fuentes with its natural and crystal clear water. This is where people used to collect water. The area nowadays is a recreational area with wooden benches and tables and some trees.

Belonging to the municipality of Sayalonga in the Axarquia region, the village is situated at 630 metres above sea level. Visitors can enjoy magnificent views in all directions, including views of the Mediterranean.

The village has three viewpoints from which you can enjoy splendid views.

We have already mentioned Alfarnate in several other articles. Also located in the Axarquia region, this village of just over a thousand inhabitants is situated at 925 metres above sea level. It therefore takes the crown among the highest villages in Malaga.

Due to this high-altitude climate, the village produces some very rich cherries. In fact, Alfarnate is the most important producer of cherries in the whole province.

Every year in June, with a variable date depending on the harvest, the Cherry Day takes place. Visitors can enjoy free tastings of more than 600 kg of Alfarnate cherries.

There are also stalls with other local products, such as bread, sweets, vegetables or oil from the Virgen de la Monsalud or goat’s cheese from the area.

The event has become very popular in recent years and receives a large number of visitors eager to buy cherries. All this is enlivened with fandango and traditional dances in a festive atmosphere.

Alfarnate preserves the essence of its Muslim origins in its urban layout, with narrow streets, flower-filled corners and charming little squares. Unlike the other villages of the Axarquia and and despite its considerable altitude, its urban centre is flat.

In other words, you won’t have to struggle up steep alleys and you will be able to discover some unique alleys in the old town: Fortuna, Sierrezuela, Triana, Aljófar and Sacristía-Mediodía alleys have Mudejar-style arches at the top of them.

Privileged location

Alfarnate has a privileged location between Malaga and Granada with valleys planted with olive and cherry trees, surrounded by imposing mountain ranges.

In the past the village was the port of passage between the two provinces. The old Inn of Alfarnate throughout its century-long history it had famous guests such as Alfonso XIII and the bandit José María el Tempranillo.

It is the oldest Inn in Andalusia of those still standing. Nowadays it is a restaurant-museum where you can taste the traditional food of the area in a setting full of history.

Liquid Gold

Do you like virgin olive oil? It is also worth highlighting Alfarnate´s olive oil production, being one of the municipalities of the Olive Oil and Mountains Route. In Alfarnate there are several cooperatives where you can buy the green gold of excellent quality: Cooperativa Virgen De Monsalud and Aceites Cañero Alfarnate S.L.

Magnificent Views

Alfarnate has unique mountain landscapes to enjoy. You can walk up to the hermitage of the Virgen de Monsalud, located in the highest part of the village, from where you can enjoy spectacular views of the valley and the surrounding mountains.

  • Santo Cristo viewpoint at the top of the village, but still close to the town centre. Its a natural viewpoint with tables and benches to enjoy a picnic among the native flora, offers the best views of the town and its surroundings.
  • Mirador de la Gran Senda de Málaga is a recently built viewpoint with panoramic views.

In addition, the municipality has several short trails that are ideal for walking, horse riding or cycling.

Stunning nature

In case you are not yet familiar with the name Álora, you might be more familiar with the Caminito del Rey.

This enclave is nowadays the main natural tourist attraction in the province. It is located in the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, a canyon more than 100 metres high, excavated by the river.

Along the vertiginous walls runs this path, which received its name due to the visit of King Alfonso XIII in 1921 to inaugurate the work of the Count of Guadalhorce Reservoir.

The reservoirs of the Guadalhorce look like emerald and turquoise jewels in the middle of nature and after the abundant rains this year they are splendid.

In the reservoir Conde de Guadalhorce there are several recreational areas and a campsite.

Moorish Castle

Walking up the steep, narrow streets of Álora, your effort will be rewarded by magnificent views of the Guadalhorce valley. All crowned by the Moorish castle of Phoenician origin.

Our Tip

The town has narrow and quite steep alleys. Driving through them can be very stressful. We recommend parking in the lower part of the village and discovering it on foot.

By the way, you can also get to Alora by the suburban commuter train C-2 or the medium distance train to Seville from Malaga city.
