Benalmadena is situated on the Costa del Sol. It is about 22 km west from Málaga city and forms part of the metropolitan area of the capital. Through the municipality run the Highway A-7 and the Motorway N-340 which connect the town with the capital and the other resorts along the Mediterranean litoral.
The municipality actually consists of three areas, which due to an elevated urban growth are tending to integrate into one big nucleus.
Benalmadena Pueblo
Benalmadena Pueblo was the original village and is situated about 3 km inland and 200 above sea level. It consists of the typical white washed houses in its historic centre.
Benalmadena Pueblo still can be imagined a little bit like the old Andalusian culture; however, who wants to get to know Andalusia should take a day trip into the more interior villages, for example, to Ronda or Antequera.
Benalmadena Costa
Benalmadena Costa is the part of town that overlooks the sea. The place is pulsing with life during the summer season and is home to the big hotels, a marina (Puerto Marina) with more than a thousand moorings for boats of all sizes and numerous restaurants, boutiques and shops of all kinds.
Most importantly, Benalmadena-Costa can boast a nine-kilometre long and pleasantly wide beach. Moreover, how could it be different in the 21st Century at a large resort, there is a big aqua and theme park, a leisure and sports centre, a casino and much more. In the area of Benalmadena can be found in a few km radius so many golf courses that a normal holiday is not enough to know them all.
Another major issue is water, no matter if you like water ski or rather prefer fishing, sailing, surfing, canoeing, kayaking, Jet Ski or powerboat driving.
Arroyo de la Miel
Arroyo de la Miel (Literally “Stream of honey”) is situated between the two former areas and was originally a separated village. Nowadays it has become the main residential area with a high urban occupancy. The attractions of Arroyo de la Miel are the Tivoli Amusement Park and a cable car (Teleferico) to the peak of the 769 meters high Calamorro Mountain, which offers panoramic views over the whole Mediterranean coast and Gibraltar and on clear days sights as far as Sierra Nevada and the African coast.
At present Benalmadena is one of the mayor tourist resorts along the Costa del Sol and noteworthy for its leisure time installations with an amusement park, two aquariums, casino, Teleferico and one of the mayor leisure and sports marinas in Andalusia.
In the close by foothill can be found as well the Enlightenment Stupa (an important structure in Buddhism), which is the largest Stupa in the western world.
Tapas bars, a wide range of cuisine and the open character of the people make this town a fun place to be which also offers a very enjoyable night-life.
Holidays in Benalmadena would not be complete without a varied nightlife. As you would expect for a resort on the Costa del Sol, the discos, bars and clubs are well attended, the holiday maker is spoiled for choice.
