This route covers five villages of inland Axarquia, all of great rural flavour, with good examples of Mudejar architecture.
Arenas is set in a small hollow surrounded by hills, with its Arab Baths and the Castle of Bentomiz, built by the Arabs upon the one-time Iberian settlement. In the area surrounding the village is the Alminar de Daimalos in the village of the same name.
With barely 400 inhabitants, Archez maintains its charm and Morisco roots. Before their expulsion, the Muslims of the area left a valuable treasure in the form of Nasri architecture: the Minaret Tower of the church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, built in the 14th century, currently topped by a Christian belltower. Another beautiful example of Mudejar art is situated in Salares: the Parish Church of Santa Ana maintains the Minaret Tower built in the 13th and 14th centuries, to which bells were added later.
During the Fiestas of Salares one has the chance to try out a wine which is completely different from all others, using as it does the unequelled Rome grape variety.
4 kms away, Sedella appears, set among an excellent area for watering crops, given the abundance of natural springs.
