If you wish to discover Malaga, begin with a long walk by the sea. The waves, the sun and the sand beneath your feet will convince you that Malaga is undoubtedly the perfect place for people who like to combine sea and city life.
However, if you love big cities and you can´t resist the temptation to go shopping, you can do so in Malaga too. Near the port you can find a large area of nightclubs, discotheques, pubs, restaurants and plenty of boutiques for all tastes. The area of La Malagueta, in fact, is the most modern and fashionable district in the city and is also the centre of nightlife for
those who want to party till dawn.
But not everything in Malaga has to do with fun. Culture lovers might find it interesting to know that the city has a large number of places, museums and churches; at the top of the hill overlooking the town are situated the Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro Castle.
The Alcazaba is a Moorish fortress which now houses the city’s archaeological museum showing historical pieces from the Greek, Roman and Arab epochs. The Arab Castle Gibralfaro has beautiful gardens and offers spectacular and unique views over the bay of Malaga.
Anyone visiting Malaga should not miss the Cathedral: The mixture of architectural styles from different eras makes this cathedral is not only very beautiful but also unique. Actually it was never finished and thus has just one tower, reason why the locals call it affectionately “The one armed Lady”.
Another place you should visit is the Picasso Museum Malaga. You can enjoy not only a rich collection of works by Picasso, but also the elegant architecture of the building that houses the museum, the Palacio de Buenavista. All this in the historic city centre where, after all this walking can you can have a well-deserved drink at one of the many terraces
and enjoy watching the passers-by.
If you are looking for a summer holiday destination and you have plans to visit Malaga during August, you have the opportunity to experience first-hand one of its oldest and most famous celebrations, the Malaga Fair. This fair, which is one of the most popular and lively fairs in Spain, commemorates the recapture of the city from the Arabs by the Catholic Monarchs.
The city centre is filled with tourists and locals dressed in typical costumes, enjoying music, wine and dancing. It’s a pretty unique event; if you like urban celebrations and want to visit Malaga, August is your month, although be prepared for very high temperatures!
