The municipality of Fuengirola, in Malaga province, has improved its touristic image by incorporating new signposts of historical and cultural points. This informative system will be extending to other municipalities on the Costa del Sol to gain a homogeneous image and reinforce the coast as a tourist destination.

Fuengirola town hall’s councilor of Public Roads and Tourism, Ignacio Souviron, introduced this system that offers the pedestrian touristic and cultural information. This initiative is part of the agreements that the consistory signed under the ‘Plan Qualifica’, specially emphasising the new ‘Parque Fluvial’ (River Park).

Souviron highlighted that this information is a big step forward “to continue offering an organised city, a homogeneous image and an attractive tourist offer”. Through this initiative, 15 directional pedestrian signposts and eight interpretive panels were placed in the municipality’s main points of touristic interest, three of which include location maps and photographs, and five, a brief description of the point where it’s placed.

He also stated that some of the plaques are accessible to the visually impaired as they include text in Braille and all the information is available in two languages: Spanish and English. Amongst the spots where they were placed you can find the ‘Plaza’ (Square) and the ‘Parque de España’ (Park of Spain), the ‘Plaza de Toros’ (Bullring), the ’Plaza de la Constitucion’ (Constitution Square), the ‘Iglesia del Rosario o del Carmen’ (Church of the patronesses Rosario or Carmen), the ‘Casa de la Cultura’ (House of Culture), the ‘Paseo Maritimo’ (Promenade / Sea front), etc.

“No doubt this is certainly a format of elegant signposting and in line with the city’s environment, without breaking the aesthetic”, he pointed out, emphasising the importance of the ordinance of the public roads. On this matter he manifested that during 2011, the amount of new terraces has increased by 10 per cent “as the entrepreneurs bet strongly on Fuengirola”.
