A total of 5.500 skiers enjoyed their first weekend of the season in Granada’s Ski and Mountain resort, Sierra Nevada, of which its winter season 2011-2012 began this past Saturday with up to 40 kms of snow to ski on. Sources of Cetursa have informed Europa Press that this Sunday “another slope has been added”, so there was really 41 kms of snow, “in other words, an area four times larger than the usual opening average, which is 10.2 kms”.

There has also been 1.100 visitors that used mechanical ways to access the Borreguiles area without skiing, they added, and empathized that, all in all, it has been a weekend “with plenty of snow, good weather and a large usable surface, which made it very comfortable to ski”.

They have qualified as “specially significant” the fact that in this year’s inauguration they also opened Laguna de las Yeguas, that had never been opened before in an inauguration, “as it’s quite a complicated area to prepare”. But, “thanks to the ski slopes department’s efforts, also for the first time in history, the Laguna area, the experts’ favourite, was available on the first day of the season”.

Ultimately, Cetursa have informed that over the next few days, in Sierra Nevada, –that will close on the 30th of April- the snow production department will be concentrating all their efforts, when the temperature allows it, in producing artificial snow in the River slope, as there is a considerable lack of snow towards the end, and it is important for the running of the resort.
