Procession of the Virgen de la Victoria

Día de la Victoria (Victory Day) is celebrated on September 8th every year when the locals commemorate the day when the Reyes Católicos (Catholic Monarchs) took the city from the Moors in the late-1400s. At midday a famous local celebrity makes a speech followed by a procession from Nuestra Señora de la Victoria Church to the city centre with the presence of Town Hall officials.

It is a colorful and exciting occasion and joining in the procession is a great way to get a different view of the city and its people.

This church, built between the 15th and 18th centuries, is located in the place where the Catholic Monarchs (Ferdinand and Isabella) set up camp during the siege of Málaga. It is one of the most well-known religious enclaves in the city, and houses the image of the Patron Saint of Málaga, Santa María de la Victoria.

It is a particularly busy place during Easter Week due to the Guild associated with it. Both the church and the square where it is located have recently been restored.
