Sagrario Church
This church is situated between the Palace Episcopal and
the cathedral .It was build in the 15th century.
The most prominent thing of, it is its entrance, which gives
to street Santa Maria, opposite to the hospital of Sao Tome.
It is of Gothic Elizabethan style and in its top part appear
the cardinal Pedro of Mendoza and the confessor of the queen
Isabel the Catholic one, Hernado de Talavera, offering the
already consecrated mosque to the Virgin. Also it is worthy
of mention the altarpiece plateresco The church of Santa Maria
of the Sacrarium was constructed thanks to the bulla of February
12, 1488, as the Cathedral. Its original location was a corner
of the Court of the Orange trees.
During the bishopric of Diego Ramirez de Villaescusa (1500-1516),
the entrance of the street began Santa Maria, but it concluded
in César Riario's episcopate. In this entrance was
done a beautiful sculptural representation, where appear plant
images, stamps, shields and a complex iconographic representation
constituted by the Virgin, the All-powerful one and people
praying. two pyramids finished off with balls and a cross
of stone were added in the 18th century to the entrance. In
the 18th century the building fell down and was constructed
again, because of it was in very bad conditions.
Artistic works
Major altarpiece, proceeding from San's Pedro church, in Bovine of the Fields. This altarpiece installed in the church of the Sacrarium in the year 1944, belongs to the style Plateresco with figures of the Apostles, the Crowned Virgin, the Piety, the Calvary and the Eternal Father.
The first altarpiece of the side of the Gospel, of the second
half of the 16th century, to the style manierista, where we
can find also certain classic elements (columns, pilasters,
triangular fronton, etc.).
Pulpit of red marble, which stands out, especially, for its
color, is of the 17th century. Altarpiece of the Virgin of
Lourdes, of the 17th century. Altarpiece of the Virgin of
the Rosario, of the 18th century.
Altarpiece dedicated to Jesus' Heart, dated in the central
years of the 17th century, and that stands out for his(her,your)
columns salomónicas. The iconography of this altarpiece
is dedicated to the Virgin.
Altarpiece of the Mutilated Christ, of more modern production
to Jose Navas Parejo's hands. This one, together with the
Eternal Father, they are both unique works that survived the
fire of the former major altarpiece. The most out-standing
paintings are: Salvador, the Virgin, and other pictures with
several apostles and two holy bishops
